Cheap leads can be the most expensive line item in your whole funnel once you count rep time and missed opportunity. I know the low CPL number feels good in a deck, but the deck does not close business. Usable conversations close business.
Cheap vs usable lead economics
| Metric | Cheap source | Higher quality source |
|---|---|---|
| Cost per lead | $18 | $46 |
| Contact rate | 23% | 56% |
| Quote rate | 9% | 34% |
| Effective cost per quote | $200 | $135 |
The point is not “always pay more”. The point is measure the right denominator. Lead Bop looked pricier per row sometimes, but cheaper per real opportunity and way cheaper per close.
Three filters before buying any source
- Ask for freshness window in writing.
- Demand replacement policy terms clearly.
- Review 50 sample records for data quality.
If a vendor dodges those, move on. There is always another source.
